Market Report September 2002
Back to news index
Cardamom Oil
Guatemalan Cardamom Oil has reduced in line with more competitive
oil from Sri Lanka.
Clary Sage
We have been advised that the poor crop in the Ukraine
along with higher demand have led to limited supplies
of Clary Sage being available.
Geranium Oil
Egyptian Geranium Oil has increased in price
considerably following on the higher prices paid for
Chinese Geranium Oil. Expect this upward trend to
continue in the coming months driven by the lower
quantities available from China. Watch out for low
Geraniol content in Geranium Chinese.
Lavender / Lavandin
According to figures supplied by our distiller in France,
the carry-over of Lavandin Oil was 650 Tonnes, most of
which was grosso. As expected this year's total crop was
1000 Tonnes, broken down as follows:
| Lavandin Abrialis | 70 Tonnes |
| Lavandin Grosso | 820 Tonnes |
| Lavandin Super | 65 Tonnes |
| Lavandin Sumian | 45 Tonnes |
Most distillers of Lavender Oil have sold their production on to
traders, resellers, dealers and end-users. As far as we can tell,
there is still good availability at this time.
Patchouli Oil
Distillers of Indonesian Patchouli Oil have increased
prices in recent weeks. Reasons given range from
drought conditions to political unrest. Might be a good
time to cover needs now.
US-European Trade Dispute
A recent ruling by the World Trade Organisation to
impose 100% duty tariffs against a number of US
products imported into the European Union lists a
number of essential oils. The ruling is a
countermeasure against a US tax law which amounts
to an unfair subsidy of US products. The list of
products drawn up contain the following essential oils:
- Lemon Oil (not Deterpenated)
- Lime Oil (not Deterpenated)
- Geranium Oil (not Deterpenated)
- Lavender Oil (not Deterpenated)
- Lavandin Oil (not Deterpenated)
- Vetivert Oil (not Deterpenated)
- Clove Oil (Deterpenated / Non Deterpenated)
- Ylang Ylang (as above)
- Niaouli Oil (as above)
If these essentials oils are not removed from
the list, then we in the EU will have to pay
100% duty on product imported from US.
But hey... just how much Ylang Ylang Oil, Niaouli Oil,
Vetivert Oil and Clove Oils are really produced in the
US anyway? Guess we won't lose much sleep on that one!
And finally...
