Market Report August 2000
Back to news index
Geranium
Spot prices for Chinese material have increased by 20% since the end of May,
after a long period of inactivity. Long term prospects for Chinese Geranium
are not good. Production has almost halved in the last decade from 120 Tonnes
per year to just over 65 Tonnes, and domestic consumption is on the increase.
Egyptian Geranium Oil is slightly cheaper at this time, and spot availability
is better.
We now have Geranium Bourbon Madagascan in stock along with a small quantity
of the Certified Organic Oil.
Lavender
Distillation of this year's crop in both Bulgaria and France well under way.
The Bulgarian Lavender Oil is similar to last year's quality, but yields are
down yet again. Prices will no doubt be higher than previous years levels.
French production should be completed in the coming weeks with availability
in September from our stock. We will have more photos from this year's French
harvest ready for next month. Please visit in September for more details.
Sandalwood
Further delays in issuing of licences in India have increased the already
inflated prices even further. When will these guys ever learn? Indonesian
material is still more attractive but obviously not as good quality wise.
Lemon
Large volumes of Argentine material have been sold on the spot market at very
attractive levels, and quality is comparable with European material. Contact
us for prices.
Eucalyptus
Prices for Chinese material slightly higher, mainly due to shortage of
material in transit from source. Volume buyers are not ordering forward,
expecting prices to decline after the summer holiday period.
We have just taken delivery of a small quantity of Spanish material distilled
from wild Eucalyptus trees. The odour is very pungent, and Cineole content
comes out at 66 per cent. Samples available on request, but availability is
limited.
Chamomile Roman
The new crop of English distilled oil is nearing completion, with yields on a par
with last season. This year, the co-operative have expanded the capacity of
the mobile still to maximise production capacity of the freshly cut material.
We will be posting lots of pictures in the next edition of the Market Report
in September.
This year the co-operative have also produced small quantities of Blue
Chamomile as well. We will have results of the analysis in due course.
The Chamomile Hydrolat will be ready for sale at the end of the month and
will be sold without the addition of any preservatives, on a first come basis.
Genetically Modified Crops
Our clients are very aware of our stance against G.M. products so I won't
start sounding off about it again. However, we found a report where Spanish
power stations are to use G.M. Giant Artichokes to produce electricity. They
are being cultivated by local farmers to generate power for an area of
Northern Spain. It is claimed that the homes of 60,000 people will be powered all
year round by over 100,000 tonnes of the vegetable. Start up is slated for 2002...
